How To Handle Mistakes You Make As A New Employee.

It is no more a secret that new employees tend to make more mistakes. As it is often said, nobody is above mistakes. We all know that making mistakes at work is quite expensive but as a new employee, you’d pass. Mistakes do have negative effects. It could put a relationship with a client on the brink of collapsing, it could put someone or other people’s safety or health at risk or it could cause you threats in your job. In situations like this the actual first method of handling it is by accepting, then correcting your mistakes and be better. Alibaba Founder, Jack Ma told a group of young leaders “In life, it’s not how much we achieved but ¬†how much we’ve gone through the tough days and mistakes”. We all make blunders both big and small, but it’s the way mistakes are taken care of that can make the difference between career success and failure. Below are tips on how to handle your mistakes at work.

1.) ACCEPT YOUR MISTAKE: Like we mentioned earlier, the first and foremost thing to do after making a mistake at work is accepting the mistake. It is very natural to make mistakes, nobody is above it. Feeling embarrassed, frustrated and awful is good and normal. This stage determines whether you will learn from the mistake or not. It is also said mistakes are teachers. If you don’t make mistakes, how would you be good at it next time? At this point, make way to your superior’s office to explain the situation to him or her. Your superior is the one person that will put you through the right path. Never try to hide your mistake else your mistakes will hide you. Hiding your mistakes could end you up in a worse case. You will never learn how to do it the right way. Accepting mistakes and paving way to correcting it is a characteristics most employees really value.

2.) EXCUSES, NOT AN OPTION: Sometimes life happens and unavoidable things occur. Giving excuses presents you as being unprofessional, scared, weak etc. Sometimes they might be valid excuses to give but they would only make it obvious that you are trying to escape the blames. Mistakes are sometimes unknown trials to check mate your level of taking responsibilities. So, instead of trying to run away stand, fight and overcome. Whatever you do, never let giving excuses the first thing on the list. Don’t offer excuses to cover up the mistake.

3.) PREPARE FOR THE WORST: “Brace for impact”. There are repercussions for mistakes either huge or mild. Sometimes you get into a mindset of exaggeration if the repercussions for your mistake which sends you in the stage of pain and regrets. Bracing can be really helpful to face your worst case scenario. You could say motivating words to yourself this moment to help you stay in a positive mindset. Learn from this and continue to work hard.

4.) CELEBRATE YOUR ERROR: This tends to reduce future occurrences. Celebrating your mistakes in this context creates the Avenue to learn more from the mistakes you’ve already made. When mistakes are celebrated, there wouldn’t be time for coming up with excuses or covering up for the mistakes. Remember, mistakes are inevitable, celebrating your error strengthens creativity and innovations.

5.) LEARN AND GROW: The moment you’ve put things back in line, the next thing you should be working on, is learning and growing. Moving forward should be your punch line and not dwelling in the past. Nobody is perfect, so instead of thriving for perfection, thrive to be a better person than you were in the past. As earlier mentioned, mistakes are an avenue or opportunity of being better. In order to learn from them, try to ponder on questions like; What did I do, that work? How did I do it? What did I do, that didn’t work? The answers to the questions will teach you. You need to know what to do differently and how to do it in order to make the mistake valuable.
